Witcher 3 Missables Checklist

Witcher 3 is forgiving — until it isn't. A few main quests are points of no return that silently fail any side content tied to them. Here's every cutoff, exactly what it locks out, and a checklist to clear it first. Tap a quest to open it; tick it off when it's done.

Your missables progress

40 time-sensitive quests tracked

Check off side quests as you finish them, then clear each gate before you cross it. Progress is saved on this device.

Imperial AudiencePrologue · White Orchard

Once you sail out of White Orchard to meet the Emperor, every White Orchard errand closes behind you. Only Faithful Friend can still be finished later.

Trips when: Leaving White Orchard for Vizima after Lilac and Gooseberries

Ugly BabyAct 2 · Kaer Morhen

Heading to Kaer Morhen with Uma advances the story past two Skellige threads. Wrap them up before you go.

Trips when: Taking Uma to Kaer Morhen to start the cure

2
The Isle of MistsAct 2 · the big one

The single most punishing cutoff in the game. The moment you sail out to find Ciri, a huge slab of open Velen and Novigrad side content auto-fails — including Keira's whole arc, the Triss romance, and the Radovid assassination chain. It also closes your last chance to recruit allies for the Battle of Kaer Morhen. Clear everything below first.

Battle PreparationsAct 3 · Skellige succession

This locks the Skellige succession arc. Decide who sits the throne — finish King's Gambit and its lead-ins first, or the crown is settled without you.

Trips when: Starting Battle Preparations

4
On Thin IceAct 3 · final approach

The last free-roam cutoff. Reason of State — the Radovid assassination payoff and a determinant of Ciri's Empress ending — must be done before this. So must a stray Velen contract.

Trips when: Starting On Thin Ice (the march on the final battle)

2
Open Sesame!Hearts of StoneHearts of Stone

Inside Hearts of Stone, finishing the heist closes two side quests tied to the auction house and its contacts.

Trips when: Completing Open Sesame!

2
Capture the CastleBlood and WineBlood and Wine

This main-quest beat closes a knight's-tournament side quest.

Trips when: Meeting Captain de la Tour during the quest

1
Beyond Hill and Dale...Blood and WineBlood and Wine

The fairy-tale realm is a one-time visit. Finish its side errand — and eat the Golden Egg skill point — before the quest pulls you back out, or both are gone for good.

Trips when: Leaving the Land of a Thousand Fables

Burlap is the New StripeBlood and Wine · epilogueBlood and Wine

Only relevant on the ending where Syanna dies and Geralt is jailed — this prison quest only exists on that path. If you're there, clear its lone errand before the quest wraps.

Romance windows

Romances close at a specific quest. Miss the window and the path is gone for that playthrough.

  • Triss MerigoldAsk Triss to stay during Now or Never. Miss it (or do it after the Isle of Mists) and the Triss path is gone.
  • Yennefer of VengerbergChoose the romantic line after the djinn in The Last Wish to lock Yen's path.
  • Both at once — don'tPursue Triss and Yennefer both and the pair turn the tables on Geralt — you end up with neither. Pick one.

Missable Gwent cards

A few cards vanish if the character who holds them dies or leaves. Win and buy early.

  • Quest-locked playersA Dangerous Game, the High Stakes tournament and the Old Pals / Big City Players chain hand out cards you can lose if you skip the quest or lose the match.
  • High Stakes tournamentYou must win the tournament outright to collect every card it offers.
  • Vendors who leaveSeveral Velen and Novigrad merchants sell cards but become unreachable as the story advances — buy them out early.
  • Now or NeverA choice here can get a card-holder killed, making their card unobtainable. (Patch 1.05 added some fail-safes, but don't rely on them.)

Things you can't permanently miss

  • Witcher contracts and treasure hunts stay in your log until you finish them — with one odd exception, Contract: Devil by the Well, which fails at On Thin Ice (see above).
  • Most “?” map points and Places of Power remain until you visit.
  • Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine are self-contained — start them any time at the recommended level.

Frequently asked questions

What is the main point of no return in Witcher 3?
Sailing to “The Isle of Mists” to find Ciri auto-fails most open secondary quests in Velen and Novigrad — including all of Keira Metz's arc, the Triss romance, and the Radovid assassination chain. Clear that side content first.
Does leveling up or finishing the main story fail side quests?
Out-leveling never fails a quest in Witcher 3 — only story progress does. A handful of main quests act as cutoffs: Imperial Audience (White Orchard), Ugly Baby, The Isle of Mists, Battle Preparations and On Thin Ice. Everything else stays open until you finish it.
Can you miss Gwent cards permanently?
Yes — a few cards come from quests or characters who can die or leave as the story advances. Win and buy cards early, especially around “A Dangerous Game,” the “High Stakes” tournament and the Old Pals / Big City Players chain.
Are contracts and treasure hunts missable?
Almost never. Witcher contracts, treasure hunts and most “?” map points stay in your log until you complete them, even into the late game. The one notable exception is Contract: Devil by the Well, which fails when you start On Thin Ice.
Do the expansions have a point of no return?
Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine are self-contained and can be started any time. Each has its own small cutoffs near its finale — finish side quests before the last main quest.
