Witcher 3 Romance Guide

Who you can romance, how to trigger each path, and the one mistake that loses both sorceresses.

The two main romances: Triss and Yennefer

Geralt's two full romances are with the sorceresses Triss Merigold and Yennefer of Vengerberg. You can pursue either one to a committed relationship — but you must choose only one. Each has a dedicated romance scene and changes how the story's quieter moments and the epilogue play out.

Yennefer is romanced during the main quest, most decisively in “The Last Wish” on Skellige, where you free a djinn with her. Triss is romanced in Novigrad during “Now or Never,” just before the mages flee the city — you must tell her you love her before she leaves.

The “both” trap — It Takes Three to Tango

If you pursue romance with both Triss and Yennefer — telling each that you love her — you trigger the quest “It Takes Three to Tango.” The two sorceresses see through the deception, leave Geralt for good, and he ends up alone for the rest of the game. This is the single most common romance mistake players make.

To avoid it, commit to exactly one. If you want neither, simply decline both — there is no penalty for staying single, and several casual encounters remain available.

Casual romances and flings

  • Keira Metz A flirtation during “A Towerful of Mice” / “For the Advancement of Learning.” It's a one-time fling, not a committed relationship, and doesn't block Triss or Yen.
  • Jutta an Dimun A shieldmaiden on Skellige — beat her in a duel during “Iron Maiden” to spend the night with her.
  • Madame Sasha A card sharp met during the “High Stakes” Gwent tournament in Novigrad.
  • Passiflora courtesans The brothel in Novigrad offers paid encounters that have no story consequences.

How the choice affects the ending

Your romance choice does not, by itself, decide Geralt's retirement ending — that's driven mainly by how you treat Ciri. But it does determine who Geralt rides off with (or whether he ends up alone), and colors the final scenes. A committed romance with either sorceress gives Geralt a clear partner in the epilogue.

Frequently asked questions

Can you romance both Triss and Yennefer?
You can try, but pursuing both triggers “It Takes Three to Tango,” after which both leave Geralt and he stays single for the rest of the game. Commit to only one to keep the relationship.
Is Keira Metz a full romance?
No — Keira is a one-time fling during her quest line. It doesn't count as committing to a partner, so it won't ruin a Triss or Yennefer romance.
Does the romance choice change the ending?
It decides who Geralt ends up with, but Ciri's fate (the main ending) depends on separate choices during her quests, not on which sorceress you romance.
Can you avoid romance entirely?
Yes. Decline both sorceresses and skip the casual encounters — there's no downside to playing Geralt as single.
