Both the learned men and the witcher escorting them had perished at the wraiths' hands. Geralt proved a mite luckier. He not only emerged from the ruins alive, but he also found all the diagrams he had gone there to seek.

Fixing a softlock

Enable the debug console, then look for a fact under Gates the quest checks — one the quest is actively waiting on. If that flag never got written, addfact it to the value shown and the gate clears.
